Two hours is a number someone picked because it is safely large. It ignores which airport you are flying from, which airline you are on, whether you are checking a bag, and how long the drive actually takes. Sometimes it is far too much. Sometimes — with checked bags on a strict carrier — it is not enough.
Travellers plan around boarding. The deadline that actually strands people is the bag drop cutoff. Delta and United stop accepting checked bags 45 minutes before departure. Frontier and Allegiant stop at 60. American closes international bags 90 minutes out. Miss that and it does not matter that boarding had not started.

The one exception, stated plainly: if you use the optional flight-number lookup, your browser asks a public flight-route database directly. That is the only outbound request the app ever makes, and only when you press the button.
